AC Running but Not Cooling?

A system can run without producing useful cooling. Start with a few safe checks, then book a diagnostic if the temperature keeps rising or the equipment shows signs of a mechanical problem.

Start with these safe checks.

1. Confirm the thermostat mode and setting

Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and the set temperature is below the current room temperature. If it uses batteries and the display is weak or blank, replace them.

2. Check the air filter

A heavily restricted filter can reduce airflow and contribute to an indoor coil freezing. Replace a visibly dirty filter with the correct size and type, but do not force the system to keep running if you see ice.

3. Confirm vents and returns are open

Look for closed supply vents, blocked return grilles, or furniture that prevents normal airflow. One closed vent is rarely the whole cause, but widespread restrictions matter.

4. Look at the outdoor unit from a safe distance

If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit is silent, repeatedly starts and stops, or is packed with debris, the system needs service. Do not open panels or reach into the unit.

5. Look for ice or water

Ice on refrigerant tubing or water around the indoor equipment can indicate a frozen coil or drainage problem. Turn cooling off and arrange service rather than repeatedly restarting it.

Why an AC can run without cooling

Possible causes include restricted airflow, a dirty coil, an outdoor-unit problem, failed electrical components, a control issue, a frozen evaporator coil, or a refrigerant-system fault. These symptoms overlap, so a diagnosis should be based on measurements, not a guess.

When should you call?

Book AC repair when the system cannot lower the temperature, shows ice or active leakage, trips a breaker, makes a new mechanical noise, or starts and stops repeatedly. Turn it off if continued operation could cause water or electrical damage.
